The Men’s Hockey League campaign gets underway for Surbiton Men on Saturday evening when they host local rivals Wimbledon at Sugden Road at 6 pm.
Since Wimbledon won promotion to the Premier Division in 2012-13, they have won three of their ten meetings with Surbiton, with the reigning league champions only successful once, ironically last season at Kings College School when Surbiton came away with a 2-1 away win
The return at Sugden Road ended up as a draw for the sixth time in the regular season series with the teams drawing 2-2
Surbiton will be aiming for a championship hat-trick having won both their MHL titles on a shootout after a 3-3 draw. In 2017, Surbiton beat Wimbledon after yet another draw (3-3) at Lee Valley, but last season, Hampstead & Westminster were the runners-up having beaten Wimbledon in the semi-finals in spite of Wimbledon finishing top of the Premier Division table after 18 games.
Beeston could have finished top with a win in their last league game but Surbiton’s 5-2 win in Nottingham saw them clinch second place behind their London rivals.
Surbiton have added Scottish international Tim Atkins to their squad from Reading with former Surbiton player James Royce returning to the club after a short spell at Sonning Lane, together with Ben Boon. Youngster Tom Sorsby arrives from the University of Nottingham.
Welsh international Gareth Furlong has returned to the Netherlands to play for HC Tilburg and Morgan Males has joined Beeston.
As last season, admission will be charged at £5 for adults with programmes given out on receipt of payment. Season tickets will also be available and more information about prices and how to obtain one will be announced shortly.
