Surbiton Ladies’ Beckie Middleton, who guested for Bowdon Hightown in the first week of the Jaffa Super 6s Premier Division, picked up a winners’ medal as Bowdon beat Leicester 2-1 in the Women’s final at the Copper Box Arena.
Middleton came on as an eleventh minute substitute as Bowdon beat Holcombe 4-3 in a very entertaining semi-final, Sally Walton and Tina Cullen both scoring twice. Steph Elliott, Emma Trunks and Sophie Aldred replied for Holcombe in a game that saw the Kent club come back from 2-1 down to lead 3-2, only for Bowdon to score twice in two minutes to secure their final place against Leicester.
Having worn a white shirt in the semi-final, Middleton donned the traditional red and black shirt for the final, Walton giving Bowdon the lead only for Rachael Mack to equalise for the East Midlands club a minute before half time.
Middleton came close to adding to the single goal she scored in the Premier Division round-robin, but it was Charlene Mason who scored a deft winning goal four minutes from the end to secure the title for the first time since 2015.
Bowdon qualify for next season’s European indoor competition, with last year’s champions, Slough heading for Prague to play in the EuroHockey Club Indoor Trophy from 23-25 February.
