Surbiton Ladies will go into the final day of the Jaffa Super 6s Division One tournament in second place behind leaders, Buckingham after battling to a 4-3 win over Brooklands Poynton at Nottingham Trent University.

Surbiton will be looking for the result of the final game of the day when the University of Birmingham take on Beeston as the winners would trail Surbiton by just one point with two games to play, whilst Sevenoaks, Surbiton’s next opponents at 9 am on Sunday, can also close to within two points with a win over St. Albans. Surbiton are also due to play Birmingham in their last game of the weekend.

Surbiton fell behind in the fourth minute, Helen Turner giving Brooklands Poynton a fourth minute lead. Natalie Maclean, who regained the captain’s armband after missing the first game against Harleston Magpies, equalised on the quarter hour to leave the teams on level terms at half time.

Lizzie Gittens’ penalty corner heroics helped Surbiton out again as a 23rd minute conversion gave Surbiton the lead for the first time. Although Katie Brough levelled for Brooklands in the 28th minute, two goals in as many minutes gave Surbiton much needed breathing space.

Gittens struck again in the 29th minute, with Anabel Herzsprung giving Surbiton a 4-2 advantage a minute later. Catherine Cherry reduced Brooklands’ deficit to 4-3 in the 31st minute, but there was no further scoring in the remaining nine minutes, and the victory kept Surbiton in the hunt for promotion to the Premier Division .
