Surbiton Ladies will play Holcombe for the third time in a row in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Championships Final after beating East Grinstead 4-1 in the second semi-final.

East Grinstead pressurised Surbiton in a goalless first quarter which saw Georgie Twigg shoot past the left post in the 13th minutes.

The game came to life in the second quarter when Izzy Petter’s spectacular finish gave Surbiton the lead in the 21st minute. When Erica Sanders doubled their lead three minutes later, Surbiton were in exactly the same position that Surbiton Men had been in at half time of their semi-final.

And just as in the men’s game, East Grinstead pulled a goal back early in the second half, Sophie Bray, the IWHL Premier Division player of the season, showing why she finished the regular season as joint top scorer with Clifton Robinsons’ Claire Thomas on 18 goals, finding space in the circle to beat Surbiton goalkeeper, Sabbie Heesh in the 32nd minute.

East Grinstead had the upper hand at this point, Ellie Rayer missing a golden chance to level the match in the 36th minute, inexplicably shooting past the left post when in a one on one situation with Heesh.

Bray forced a save from Heesh, again preventing East Grinstead from equalising and the potential to turn the match around.

Surbiton badly needed an insurance goal but had to wait until the 53rd minute to secure it, Sanders deflecting Petter’s shot past Yahya Farahayuni to put Surbiton 3-1 ahead.

Two minutes later, Hannah Martin passed for Petter to finish confidently and book Surbiton’s place in the final.

Twigg and Giselle Ansley, whose shot was saved from Surbiton’s only penalty corner of the game, were selected to the IWHL Premier Division All Star Team.

Holcombe cruised to victory over Buckingham in the first semi-final, although they only led 1-0 after 43 minutes.

Candice Manuel gave Holcombe the lead from a twelfth minute penalty corner and Buckingham stayed in contention until Holcombe scored three lightning goals in the last two minutes of the third quarter.

Dirkie Chamberlain scored in the 44th minute with Sofia Viarengo Cervino and Phillippa Lewis both scoring in the 45th minute, all three goals coming from open play.

Leah Wilkinson added a fifth goal in the 54th minute and Heather McEwan scored the sixth goal three minutes later to ensure that Surbiton and Holcombe will meet in the final for the third time, both previous meetings ending in 3-1 victories for Surbiton.

The final starts at 4 pm following Surbiton Men’s attempt to secure a hat-trick of titles when they also face a rematch against Hampstead & Westminster at 1.45 pm on Sunday.
