Surbiton Ladies will play Clifton Robinsons in the Investec Women’s Tier One Championship Final at Lee Valley on 5 May after beating Brooklands Poynton 2-0 at Sugden Road on Saturday afternoon.

Clifton Robinsons beat Buckingham 8-7 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in Bristol on Sunday afternoon.

Brooklands, who finished second in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Conference North, made life hard for Surbiton with dogged defending, both Surbiton goals coming from second half penalty corners.

In sunny and warm conditions, Brooklands forced a second minute penalty corner, the resulting shot going past the left post.

Surbiton responded with a penalty corner four minutes later, Sarah Page’s shot also ending up past the left post.

In the 12th minute, Holly Payne’s shot was deflected for a long corner after Beckie Middleton and Georgie Twigg combined well.

Surbiton went closest late in the first half, youngster Issy Carey sliding towards goal and just failing to poke a cross from the right home.

In the second half, some good saves from Brooklands goalkeeper Teresa Crookall and excellent defensive work from Kirsty Dawson, Amy Gavin, Amy Gavin and Jen Park threatened to frustrate Surbiton’s attacking ambitions.

Surbiton still managed to play some good attacking hockey, Payne playing a one-two move with Alessia Robinson, but Brooklands defence held firm.

The breakthrough came in the 52nd minute, Emily Atkinson injecting the ball and then racing to the left post to finish off Surbiton’s third penalty corner.

Six minutes from the end, Georgie Twigg got the final touch to another excellent manoeuvred penalty corner routine to double Surbiton’s lead.

The cup final at Lee Valley will start at 3 pm.
