Surbiton Ladies came from 3-0 and 4-2 down to pip Beeston 5-4 in their second game at the Jaffa Super 6s in Bristol on Saturday.
Incredibly, the first half was goalless before the goals started flooding in in the second half.
The Surbiton defence was caught out three times in the first two minutes after half time with Lunjika Nyirenda scoring in the 21st and 22nd minutes, either side of Vikki Bunce’s 22nd minute penalty corner conversion as Beeston raced into a 3-0 lead.
But Surbiton’s youngsters were not discouraged and fought back to only trail 3-2, Ellie Tait and Darcy Bourne both scoring in the 25th minute as Surbiton quickly got back into the game.
With nine minutes remaining, Nyirenda extended Beeston’s lead to 4-2, completing her hat-trick at the same time.
Within a minute, Tait had scored her second goal of the game to reduce Beeston’s lead to 4-3 and when Fifi Robinson equalised with six minutes remaining, there was all to play for.
The winning goal came in the last minute, Tait joining Nyirenda by notching a hat-trick to give Surbiton a thrilling victory and maintain their one hundred per cent record. Bourne and Tait finished day one with four goals apiece.
Surbiton will face a tough task at 1100 on Sunday when they face Buckingham, relegated from the Premier Division last season. Buckingham beat the University of Birmingham, who came down with them, 3-2 and then thrashed St. Albans 6-1, so will pose a serious threat. Their second game on Sunday against Chelmsford at 1600 should prove to be a better prospect although no game will be easy.
