Surbiton Ladies will play Holcombe in Sunday’s Investec Women’s Hockey League Championships Final after beating Buckingham 3-0 at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Saturday.

Holcombe were 1-0 down with five minutes to play after Georgie Blackwood gave East Grinstead the lead at the end of the first half but scored twice in the last five minutes to earn a rematch of last season’s final. Joanne Westwood equalised in the 55th minute with Ellie Watton scoring the winner with two minutes remaining.

Surbiton, facing Buckingham for the first time with all of their international players, with the exception of captain, Sarah Haycroft, sidelined through injury, took the lead in the tenth minute. Giselle Ansley’s drag-flick from Surbiton’s second penalty corner eluding Buckingham goalkeeper, Ella Jackson.

In spite of dominating possession, Surbiton strugged to find the finishing touch, Beckie Middleton just failing to touch in a cross from the right and stand-in captain, Georgie Twigg unlucky not to finish off a penalty corner at the right post.

Buckingham forced a penalty corner near the end of the first quarter, but in spite of having few scoring chances, remained in the game until five minutes from time.

A minute earlier, Hannah Martin had shot narrowly past the right post, but Hollie Pearne-Webb defiantly found the backboard in the 55th minute to give Surbiton one foot in the final.

Trailing 2-0 Buckingham installed Rebecca van Berkel as a kicking back, a tactic which had earned them a dramatic 1-0 home win over the reigning league champions on the last day of the regular season.

This time the tactic failed as an attack found Holly Payne in position to slot the ball into the empty goal to give Surbiton a 3-0 victory.

Both the men’s and women’s finals can be seen on the BBC Sport website, app and on internet connected TVs.
