Surbiton Ladies won the Investec Women’s Hockey League Championships title for a record breaking fifth season, beating Holcombe 3-1 in the final at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Sunday.

The scoreline was a repeat of the 2017 final, but Surbiton were always in command after rushing to a 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes.

Sarah Page tipped Beckie Middleton’s cross from the left into the goal with her stick just under the crossbar in the eighth minute to give the reigning champions the perfect start.

Two minutes later, Hollie Pearne-Webb doubled Surbiton’s lead from their first penalty corner of the match.

Any chance that Holcombe had of mounting a comeback was effectively ended four minutes before half time, Beckie Middleton converting a penalty corner for a 3-0 commanding half time lead.

Surbiton were unable to add further goals in the second half, in spite of Jo Hunter shooting past the left post, Georgie Twigg shooting over the crossbar, Middleton forcing a save and Holly Payne having a shot defended by Joanne Westwood.

Holcombe’s consolation goal came five minutes after half time, Heather McEwan slipping the ball into the goal from the bye-line, but Surbiton’s defence ensured that the Kent club will play in the second division Trophy in Europe next season.

Surbiton will be back in the EuroHockey Club Cup, having hosted the competition, which starts at Sugden Road on 17 May and concluded on 20 May.

Twigg was named Player of the Match and umpire Frances Block was appointed to her final national league match after an illustrious career with the whistle.
