Surbiton Ladies beat Wapping 7-1 to reach the second round of the Investec Adult Championships Women’s Tier 1, but only after being restricted to a 2-1 half time lead at Sugden Road on Sunday afternoon.

Wapping included former Surbiton player Aisling McKeon in their squad, whilst Surbiton’s Beckie Middleton took over the captaincy from Georgie Twigg in the absence of Sarah Haycroft, currently in Auckland with England’s Hockey World League Final tournament squad.

Surbiton were quickly out of the traps, taking the lead after just two minutes, Jenna Woolven scoring on her first appearance for the club this season. Four minutes later, Middleton doubled the lead as the last winners of the Investec Women’s Cup began their restructured knockout competition campaign in fine style.

However, the expected cricket score failed to materalise as Wapping settled down and played hockey in the proper spirit with Jordan Mulvaney and Lottie Colquhoun attacking the Surbiton defence.

Wapping’s goalkeeper, Megan Pugh had an excellent game, especially making good saves from Surbiton’s penalty corner routines.

Four minutes before half time, Mulvaney scored with a lobbed shot, a deserved reward for Wapping’s efforts and a boost to the East League Premier Division team’s confidence.

After an intensive half time team talk by Surbiton coach Niall Mutch, the home team responded quickly, Woolven scoring her second goal of the game, from the left of the circle, three minutes into the second half.

In the 46th minute, Olivia Chilton crossed from the right for Stephanie Addison to finish and extend Surbiton’s lead to 4-1. Two minutes later, Darcy Bourne crossed for Chilton to dive in the circle and deflect the ball high into the goal netting

In the 50th minute, Bourne went close, her shot well stopped on the goal-line and cleared by the Wapping defence as the visitors fought hard.

With eleven minutes to play, youngster Emily Leeson attempted a shot, the ball finding its way for Ella Burnley to score, more evidence that Surbiton’s youth policy is paying dividends.  With just five minutes remaining, Izzy Petter scored from close range to make the final score 7-1, a result which showed the gulf between the teams, but was not a fair reflection of the hard work and effort that Wapping put into the game.

At no point did Wapping become dispirited and to their credit they made Surbiton battle for their goals.

The next round of the cup is scheduled for Sunday 3 December.
