Surbiton Ladies kept up their promotion bid with a 4-3 win over Reading in their first match of the second weekend of the Jaffa Super Sixes at Nottingham Trent University.

However, Surbiton needed a last gasp goal from captain, Natalie Maclean in the final minute to avoid dropping vital points after Reading fought back from being 2-0 down after just seven minutes. It was a repeat of the previous weekend’s opening match heroics against Cambridge City when Izzy Petter scored in the last minute to secure a 4-3 victory after Surbiton trailed 2-0 at half time.

Susie Catlin scored the first two goals from open play but Reading reduced the deficit in half to 2-1 at the interval after Fran Clements scored from a penalty corner in the 18th minute.

Katie Pugh equalised for Reading five minutes into the second half only for Catlin to complete her hat-trick in the 28th minute and restore Surbiton’s lead.

Pugh struck again in the 32nd minute to make the score 3-3 before Maclean secured a unique hat-trick of her own. Banished to the sin-bin after seeing green in the 33rd minute, Maclean made a return trip two minutes later after being shown a yellow card before scoring a much needed winning goal at the end of the game to maintain Surbiton’s unbeaten record in the division.

Surbiton will be tested in their second game of the day when they face Sutton Coldfield, their 4-1 win against Cambridge City keeping them at the top of the table with maximum points from five games.
