Surbiton Ladies reached Round 3 of the Investec England Hockey Championships Tier One Competition, beating fellow Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division side East Grinstead 2-1 at Sugden Road on Sunday.
The game was played in milder conditions compared with temperatures earlier in the week, with both clubs fielding 14 player squads for their first teams’ final official outdoor fixtures of 2017.
East Grinstead attacked early in the game before Surbiton began to settle down.
Surbiton took the lead in the 12th minute, Robyn Collins following up from her brace against the University of Birmingham, converting Surbiton’s first penalty corner of the game.
Both teams played entertaining hockey under the Sugden Road floodlights with East Grinstead defending four further penalty corners before half time.
Early in the second half, Surbiton forced further penalty corners with visiting goalkeeper, Millie Regan saving from Collins, who also struck the left post with a drag flick from a subsequent award.
East Grinstead survived and fought back nine minutes into the second half, their captain, Ruth Gordon equalising from open play.
Six minutes later, Surbiton’s penalty corner routine was successful for a second time, Olivia Chilton forcing the ball into the netting with an overhead stick at the left post.
Neither side could make a further breakthrough Natalie Maclean deflected the ball over the crossbar as Surbiton found their attacking rhythm.
Holding a one goal lead, Surbiton relied on their captain, Georgie Twigg to run out the clock, maintaining possession and withholding the ball from the East Grinstead defenders.
Surbiton’s second team weren’t quite as fortunate, losing 6-5 on penalty strokes after a 1-1 draw in normal time at Barnes, The penalty stroke barrage went to sudden death before the IWHL Conference East side prevailed over the one division lower South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division One leaders.
