Surbiton Ladies became the first winners of the Investec Women’s Tier One Championships at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Saturday afternoon.
They beat IWHL Premier Division rivals, Clifton Robinsons 5-0, exactly the same scoreline that Surbiton won the last Investec Women’s final by last season.
Clifton included former Surbiton players, Hannah Coulson, who was in the Bristol club’s starting lineup and Kate Holmes, a 12th minute substitute.
Just as against Holcombe in last week’s IWHL Championship final, Surbiton scored two early goals. Hollie Pearne-Webb found the backboard from Surbiton’s first penalty corner in the fifth minute. Seven minutes later, Beckie Middleton reacted to put away a rebound after Giselle Ansley’s drag-flick came back off the crossbar from Surbiton’s second penalty corner.
To Clifton’s credit, they tried to fight back, Claire Thomas seeing her shot saved by Surbiton goalkeeper, Ellie Shahbo in the 22nd minute. A minute later Clifton went close again with a shot past the left post.
Surbiton had the chance to go into the half time break with a three goal advantage, but Middleton miscued at the left post with Clifton goalkeeper, Sarah Ellis out of position.
Alice Sharp and Olivia Chilton’s runs put pressure on the Clifton defence, with Hannah Martin also making threatening runs into the circle.
Pearne-Webb struck again in the 46th minute from Surbiton’s sixth and final penalty corner, before two open play goals in as many minutes sealed Surbiton’s fourth knockout final win in six appearances.
Sarah Page’s shot from the right of the circle was perfectly angled to strike the left sideboard just wide of the left post and before Clifton could react, Middleton scored her second goal of the game from Surbiton’s next attack for another historic day for the Sugden Road club.
Surbiton captain,Georgie Twigg collected her second trophy of the week with Sarah Haycroft sidelined through injury.
Surbiton have now beaten Clifton Robinsons in three finals, 3-2 in 2015 and 5-0 in 2017. Surbiton’s other triumph came against Hampstead and Westminster in Nottingham in 2014, Surbiton winning 7-1, all whilst Surbiton were in the IWHL Premier Division.
In their two seasons in the IWHL Conference East, Surbiton reached the Investec Women’s Cup final twice, losing 4-1 on both occasions at Cannock. Bowdon Hightown won in 2011, followed by the University of Birmingham in 2012.
With their domestic season completed, Surbiton will now prepare for the Eurohockey Club Cup which they are hosting from 17-20 May.
