With the Commonwealth Games approaching, Surbiton’s players were in capped and uncapped action over the weekend.
Wales, including Surbiton’s Lewis Prosser and Gareth Furlong travelled to Antibes to take on France in a three test match series. France, ranked 18th compared to Wales’ 24th world ranking, won all three games.
Prosser and Furlong started on all three occasions as France won the first match on Friday, 4-0, with France scoring two late goals; 1-0 on Saturday and 2-0 on Sunday.
Meanwhile in Gran Canaria, Surbiton Ladies’ Robyn Collins was in the Scottish squad which played a five game uncapped series against Wales. Scotland won four games with the other ending up scoreless.
Scotland won the first match 1-0 on 21 January, with the teams drawing 0-0 two days later. On 24 January, Scotland won 1-0 again, following up with a 2-0 win on 26 January and a 2-1 win on 28 January, former Surbiton player, Becky Merchant scoring Scotland’s first goal. The Scottish defence was also in top form, The Welsh goal coming as a result of a penalty stroke.
Scotland Men continue their preparation for the Commonwealth Games in a Five Nations tournament in Malaga starting on Monday (29 January). Scotland have named a 24 player squad including Surbiton’s Alan Forsyth, Chris Grassick, Willie Marshall and Nick Parkes to take on the USA on 29 January; Canada (including former Surbiton player Richie Hildreth) on 30 January; Ireland on 1 February and Spain on 3 February.
