It is with great sadness that we must report the untimely passing of former member, Hylke van Slooten, aged just 30 years old. Hylke started off at Surbiton as a colt, playing in the Dragons (where I played with him) and then for the M2s for six years. He was selected for the England U16s and captained the U18 team that won silver in the European championships held in Poland.

Returning to the Netherlands, Hylke played for HGC in the Hoofdklasse for 4 years, winning a runners-up medal in the 2005 league championships. He then spent three years at Klein Zwitzerland, playing in the second tier, before returning to the Hoofdklasse with Schaerweijde where he played for three years before illness forced his retirement in 2016.

A tribute and short film about Hylke can be seen on Schaerweijde’s website here.

The van Slooten family were much-loved members of the club, and we extend our deepest sympathy to Dirk and Marieke van Slooten on their loss.

The funeral is on Monday.
