The Futures Cup concluded at Oaklands College in St. Albans on Saturday with shootouts being needed in two finals.

Surbiton’s Tom Fox and Tobias Chan were members of the victorious Mercia Lynx Under 15 Boys squad which beat Pennine Pumas 5-3 in the final, Chan scoring Lynx’s second goal. Wessex Leopards also beat Saxon Tigers 5-3 to finish third. The fifth place playoff was closer with the Caledonian Cougars beating the Celtic Jaguars 1-0.

The Under 15 Girls title needed a shootout to separate the Lynx and the Pumas after a goalless draw after 60 minutes of intense action. Although Surbiton’s Tamera Cookman was unlucky not to score from Lynx’s first attempt, Tasmin Cookman scored what proved to be the winner as the Lynx won 2-0 after converting two of three attempts, with the Pumas failing to score from all four.

Surbiton also had goalkeeper, Tessa Shahbo; Lily Johnson, Maddie Long, Sally Pethybridge and Tali Gibbons in the championship squad.

Saxon Tigers beat Wessex Leopards 5-1 to finish third whilst the Cougars beat the Jaguars 3-1 to finish fifth.

Surbiton’s Joe Farmer was in the Tigers squad which beat the Pumas 5-2 to lift the Under 17 Boys trophy. The Leopards beat the Lynx for the bronze medals with the Cougars prevailing over the Jaguars 5-3 for fifth place.

The Under-17 Girls final also went to a shootout, the Leopards winning 4-2 against the Lynx after a goalless scoreline at full time.

Surbiton had seven players in the Lynx squad, Emily Guckian and Kitty Baccanello thwarted by Leopards’ goalkeeper Maddie James in the shootout, but although Emily Leeson managed to score, it was Lynx’s day.

Surbiton goalkeeper, Jemma Woods was in the Leopards starting lineup and Alice Klugman and Olivia Wilde were also in the winning squad with the ten Surbiton Colts players experiencing mixed emotions after the shootout.

The Cougars beat the Pumas 1-0 for third place, with the Tigers proving too strong for the Jaguars, running out 9-1 winners to clinch fifth. Surbiton’s Stephanie Weber scored Tigers’ eighth goal.
