Wales Men bounced back from their disappointing defeat to Austria, to beat Switzerland 7-1 in their third game in the Hockey Open Series in Zagreb.

Wales (World Ranking 24) are ranked four places above Switzerland (WR 28) but after a competitive first half in which the teams scored one goal each, Wales pulled away to cruise to a comfortable victory.

Wales just needed 61 seconds to break the deadlock, Ben Francis scoring from open play. Switzerland equalised four minutes later through Pascal Knabenhans.

The second quarter was goalless before Wales completely dominated the second half.

Francis restored the Welsh lead in the 35th minute before Surbiton’s Gareth Furlong made his mark, converting a penalty corner in the 39th minute and then giving Wales a 4-1 lead from the penalty spot four minutes later.

Owain Dolan-Gray dived to score Wales’ fifth goal in the 49th minute and seconds later, Furlong completed his hat-trick, converting a penalty corner at the second attempt.

Two minutes from time, it was Francis’s turn to notch a hat-trick as Wales ran riot.

Furlong along with Surbiton team-mate, Lewis Prosser, the Welsh captain, were both in the starting lineup.

Wales play their final match against hosts, Croatia on Saturday at 6.30 pm (BST).
