Wales Men made the ideal start to their Hockey Series Open campaign in Zagreb, beating Slovakia 6-1 in the opening match of the tournament on Monday.
Surbiton players, Gareth Furlong and Lewis Prosser, the Welsh captain, who were both in the starting lineup, were on target, Furlong scoring twice and Prosser once.
Wales (World Ranking 24) took the lead against Slovakia (WR 50) in the sixth minute, Furlong converting a penalty corner. Jacob Draper doubled the lead in the tenth minute, with Benjamin Francis giving Wales a 3-0 half time lead after scoring in the 22nd minute.
Rhys Bradshaw added the fourth goal in the 39th minute, Furlong scoring the fifth goal from the penalty spot a minute from the end of the third quarter.
Tomáš Romanec scored Slovakia’s consolation goal with a penalty corner conversion in the 48th minute, Prosser completing the scoring form open play ten minutes from time.
Wales play Austria on Tuesday, Switzerland on Thursday and Croatia on Saturday in their remaining fixtures.
