England Under-21 Men opened their EuroHockey Junior Championship campaign with an 8-0 win over Portugal in Valencia, Spain on Monday afternoon.
Former Surbiton player, Will Calnan scored five goals including two penalty corner conversions and two penalty strokes with Duncan Scott, Jack Clee and Peter Scott scoring the other goals. England led 3-0 at half time.
Surbiton’s Zach Wallace came on as a fourth minute substitute.
England play the Netherlands on Wednesday at 4.45 pm BST and hosts Spain on Thursday at 7 pm BST in their other Pool A games. The top two teams in each pool qualify for the semi-finals.
Pool B consists of Austria, Belgium, Germany and Ireland.
England’s women also got off to a good start beating Ireland 3-0, former Surbiton player, Holly Munro opening the scoring with Erica Sanders and Holly Hunt also scoring in the first half.
England are due to play Germany on Tuesday at 4.45 pm BST and France on Thursday at 8 am BST in their remaining Pool B games.
The women’s Pool A consists of Belgium, Netherlands and Spain.
