England Under-21 Men narrowly missed out on a semi-final place at the EuroHockey Junior Championships in Valencia, Spain after drawing 2-2 with the hosts in their final pool game.

With the top three teams all finishing on five points, England missed out on goal difference with Spain topping the pool with a plus 12 goal difference and the Netherlands second on plus 10 with England on plus 8.

England now find themselves in the relegation pool (Pool C) but carry forward three points from their 8-0 win over Portugal. The other two teams, Ireland and Austria, carry a point each after their 4-4 draw in their pool.

England take on Ireland on Saturday (2 September) at 1015 am BST and face Austria at 8.15 am on Sunday.

Against Spain, England came from behind twice, Mark Escudé and Xavier Gispert giving the hosts the lead in the 8th and 27th minutes with former Surbiton player, Will Calnan levelling in the 14th minute and Tom Sorsby equalising the second time with twelve minutes to play.

Surbiton’s Zach Wallace came on as a second minute substitute.

England’s Under-21 Women will play Belgium in the first semi-final of their competition at 4.30 pm BST on Saturday.

England maintained their one hundred per cent record in their pool, beating France 3-2 early on Thursday morning.

Delfina Gaspari gave France the lead in the 17th minute, only for former Surbiton player, Holly Munro to equalise immediately.

Charlotte Childs gave England a 2-1 lead in the 35th minute, only for Victorine Vankemmel to equalise five minutes later.

Erica Sanders gave England the win a minute from time.
