England’s women pulled out a fantastic defensive performance but couldn’t prevent Argentina winning 1-0 with a 57th minute reverse stick strike from Delfina Merino in their second Sentinel Homes Hockey World League pool game in Auckland on Sunday.

With Germany beating China 3-0 in Sunday’s first match, Argentina and Germany both have maximum points and will be playing for top spot in the group on Tuesday. England will meet China at 7 am GMT on Tuesday, needing to draw to avoid finishing bottom of the pool and a likely quarter-final match up with the Netherlands.

Surbiton’s Giselle Ansley, Emily Defroand, Sarah Haycroft and Hollie Pearne-Webb were all in the England starting line-up, with Hannah Martin coming on as a fifth minute substitute.

Martin received a green card in between Argentina’s Maria Granatto seeing green and Lucina von der Heyde being shown yellow, all within a spell between the 36th and 38th minutes.
