England Men will play hosts Spain in the Four Nations semi-finals in Valencia on Saturday after slipping to a third consecutive 2-1 defeat on Thursday.
England were heading for a 1-1 draw when Xavi Lleonart scored Spain’s winning goal from the penalty spot with just three minutes to play.
Pau Quemada had put Spain ahead with a 19th minute penalty corner conversion, but Chris Griffiths equalised in the same manner at the start of the third quarter.
Surbiton’s Zach Wallace was rested, but Harry Gibson, Luke Taylor and James Gall were all in the starting lineup. Brendan Creed and David Goodfield both came on from the subs bench.
Spain finished top with nine points, the Netherlands second on seven points, finishing the round-robin stage with a 7-1 thrashing of Ireland, who will meet again in the other semi-final.
