England Men will play either Ireland or the Netherlands in the third place playoff at the Four Nations Tournament in Valencia on Sunday (9 am GMT) after losing 3-0 to Spain in the first semi-final on Saturday.
Enrique Gonzalez gave Spain the lead in the eighth minute, Pau Quemada doubling the hosts’ lead a minute before the end of the first quarter with a penalty corner conversion.
Gonzalez added Spain’s third goal with three minutes to play. Spain had two players shown yellow cards in the last two minutes, Ignacio Rodriguez’s offence deemed worthy of a ten minute suspension and Marc Salles’ worth five minutes, but with very little time left, Spain’s two player shorthanded situation made little difference.
This time it was David Goodfield’s turn to be rested, with Brendan Creed and James Gall in the England starting lineup. Harry Gibson (making his 50th international appearance), Luke Taylor and Zach Wallace all came on from the subs bench.
