England Women beat Ireland 1-0 in their final pool match to secure second place in Pool B and a crossover matchup with Korea at 8.15 pm on Tuesday 31 July.

Surbiton’s Giselle Ansley was England’s heroine with a 53rd minute penalty corner on a night when the hosts once again struggled with their penalty corner routine.

After converting one of nine set-pieces against India, England finally converted from their fourteenth award of the night, Ansley finding the backboard to set Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre buzzing.

Ansley also forced a save from England’s fifteenth and last penalty corner in the penultimate minute as Ireland finally lost their unbeaten record and England became only the second team to win a Pool B match.

England not only dominated in corners but outshot Ireland 31 to 4 and entered the circle 39 times to Ireland’s 9, but once again, England failed to find the final touch from open play.

Ansley joined Hollie Pearne-Webb and Sarah Haycroft in the starting lineup with Hannah Martin coming on as a third minute substitute and Jo Hunter coming on five minutes later.

After the match, Martin felt that England had played just as well as in the first two matches “We dominated the match and are pleased to get the result.”

As for the much publicised fact that the players are giving up social media for the tournament, Martin reviewed “We’re not missing it at all and it’s helping us to focus on the matches.”
