East Grinstead ended Surbiton Men’s Jaffa Super 6s defence, winning 3-1 in the second semi-final at the Copper Box Arena on Sunday afternoon.

East Grinstead led 1-0 at half time, Simon Faulkner opening the scoring in the eleventh minute from open play.

Both sides contrived to hit the post in the first half, Ben Allberry striking Surbiton’s left post in the 13th minute, with Rob Farrington hitting East Grinstead’s right post two minutes later.

Surbiton’s German player, Hendrik Geyer shot past the left post a minute before the interval as both teams played end to end hockey but failed to manage the phenomenal scoring rate in the 2017 final when Surbiton won 12-5.

East Grinstead struck twice early in the second half to leave Surbiton with a mountain to climb if they were to reach the final. Dominic Bowden found the backboard from open play in the 22nd minute, with Ross Stott connecting with a cross from the left to put the West Sussex club 3-0 ahead.

Harry Gibson made an excellent double save in the 31st minute from first Tijn van Groesen and secondly Ross Stott.

With two minutes remaining, Jonny Gall donned the kicking back’s bib, but East Grinstead got their tactics right and earned their place in the final against Team Bath Buccaneers.

Team Bath held Wimbledon to a 3-3 draw in normal time before winning the shootout 1-0 with the final shot after the first five attempts had ended in failure.

Surbiton travel to Sevenoaks next Saturday when the Men’s Hockey League Premier Division resumes after the mid-season break, then travel to Wettingen in Switzerland to compete in the EuroHockey Indoor Club Cup from 16 to 18 February.
