Surbiton Ladies Second Team won the England Hockey 2nd XI Cup for the first time in their history with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Clifton Robinsons at Lee Valley on Monday afternoon.

Clifton had won the West Clubs Women’s Hockey League Premier Division title, and had lost 2-0 to the University of Birmingham in last season’s final, but could not prevent Surbiton making up for final disappointment in 2011 and 2015.

The teams cancelled each other out early on before Izzy Petter gave Surbiton the lead from open play in the 24th minute.

Three minutes later, Petter’s long ball was turned in by Hannah Birchall from short range to double Surbiton’s lead.

Petter struck again in the 31st minute with a brilliant individual goal, with Hannah Denison adding a fourth goal a minute later putting away a rebound from the team’s fourth penalty corner to give Surbiton a 4-0 half time lead.

The heavens opened early in the second half causing the floodlights to be switched on, but once the rain stopped, Lucy Holder scored the goal of the match with a run at the Clifton defence, eluding the defenders before clinically finding the backboard with a goal easily fit to have won a final, let alone contribute to a win.

Surbiton had suffered heartache on shuffles to Beeston in 2015 and to a golden goal 3-2 loss to the University of Birmingham in 2011, but the day after Surbiton Ladies won the Investec Women’s Cup with a 5-0 win over Clifton Robinsons, the Ladies Second Team matched the feat in front of a vociferous and fantastic group of supporters.
